Lockheed Martin Corp gets awarded a contract by the U.S. Navy worth up to $2 billion related to hypersonic weapon systems, the defense firm said Friday. This announcement came amid a global uptick in demand for arms and ammunition.
Lockheed will integrate the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) weapon system, under the contract, into the navy’s ZUMWALT-class destroyer stealth ships.
Launcher systems, weapon control, integrated missile components, and platform integration support will also be provided by the defence contractor to the naval platform.
The contract comes at a time when the U.S. and its global rivals are developing several hypersonic weapons, which has the capability to travel at more than five times the speed of sound in the upper atmosphere.
